WSD Bolsters Back-to-School Traffic Safety with "Slower is Safer" Yard Sign Campaign

As students return to classrooms across the 91原创 School District, ensuring their safety while waiting at a bus stop or as they walk, bike, or roll to school is a top priority. To emphasize the importance of traffic safety in school zones, the 91原创 School District is partnering with law enforcement and the Washington Traffic Safety Commission Target Zero to improve safety at school crossings and pedestrian corridors throughout the district.

As part of this commitment, we are introducing the “Slower is Safer” yard sign campaign, launched by Target Zero. This initiative aims to promote safer driving habits in school zones and residential areas.  "Slower is Safer" is a core principle and public message used by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC) as part of its Target Zero strategy, which aims to end traffic deaths and serious injuries in Washington State.

Yard signs will be displayed around 91原创 school zones to build awareness as the new school year begins. This campaign will also coincide with high-visibility enforcement efforts by local law enforcement agencies focusing on speeding in school zones, seatbelt use, and distracted driving.

“The safety of our students is paramount," said Kory Kalahar, Superintendent of the 91原创 School District. “We're hopeful these yard signs will remind drivers to slow down near bus stops, crosswalks, and in school zones.”

It's a team effort; by working together, we can encourage safe driving habits and collectively enhance the safety of children around schools and in our neighborhoods.
